Tentative Title: Advances in Temporal Anti-Aliasing for Real-Time Volumetric Rendering in Frustum-Based Voxel Systems

Abstract / Problem Statement: Volumetric rendering allows the visualization of complex phenomena—such as fog, smoke, and light scattering—crucial for achieving visual realism in modern games and simulations. One of the key limitations in real-time volumetric rendering is the need to balance visual fidelity with performance constraints, often resulting in a restricted froxel resolution. This low resolution leads to visible aliasing and loss of detail in the rendered volumes. To address such limitations, temporal upsampling techniques are employed, accumulating information over time. Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) algorithms are pivotal in reducing ghosting, flickering and shimmering artifacts in real-time rendering but are mostly developed and tuned for 2D rasterized images. This thesis proposes an investigation of established and novel TAA approaches for real-time volumetric rendering, specifically targeting a froxel system. This work would be carried out within the volumetric system in the Frostbite engine.

The objective is to:

  • (a) Survey and categorize existing TAA algorithms and analyze their applicability to volumetric and froxel contexts.

  • (b) Implement and adapt leading algorithms to a froxel system (such as neighbourhood/variance clip, hybrid spatial-temporal filters, moment-based filtering, or machine learning-based solutions).

  • (c) Compare these methods in terms of visual quality, temporal stability, and real-time feasibility.

(d) Identify and propose potential improvements or new methods tailored for 3D voxel-based volumetric rendering.
