Description & Requirements

Electronic Arts creates next-level entertainment experiences that inspire players and fans around the world. Here, everyone is part of the story. Part of a community that connects across the globe. A place where creativity thrives, new perspectives are invited, and ideas matter. A team where everyone makes play happen.

SEED is a pioneering group within Electronic Arts, combining creativity with applied research. We explore, build, and help define the future of interactive entertainment.

We exist at EA to deliver and foster inspiring innovation for our games and our players. We do this through exploration, research, prototypes, and never-ending curiosity. We collaborate with game teams and industry partners and also publish our research within our industry and to the public. We pursue long-term applied research yet stay relevant to the present by delivering artifacts along the way to game teams and technology groups inside EA. Some of our research includes bringing digital characters to life, using machine learning for game AI and content creation, and developing novel real-time graphics & physics techniques.

We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer to join the Intelligent Agents research vector to create the next generation of game AI. Our work centers on the latest technologies, including Reinforcement Learning, Language Models, and Imitation Learning. The Intelligent Agents team collaborates directly with game studios to create agent solutions today, while also driving toward our long-term goal of developing the next generation of interactive and reasoning agents for players. The team has a track record, having deployed machine learning (ML) agents in FC26 and testing ML agents for the Battlefield franchise. You will focus on foundation models, Language Models (LMs) and Action Models for the purpose of novel AI experiences. This is an applied role. You will translate your ideas into functional demonstrations (e.g. demos) to guide innovation in a very practical way.

This is a hybrid remote/in-office role - 3 days/week at the office - from our SEED office in Stockholm, Sweden. You will report to our Intelligent Agents research vector lead.

As a Research Engineer at SEED, you will:

  • Develop novel ideas by researching and implementing solutions to some of the most complex challenges in video game AI, helping create difference for EA.

  • Contribute to applied research in areas such as Language Models, Reinforcement Learning, and reasoning. This includes proposing new use cases and algorithms for player-facing game AI agents, while targeting real-time, on-device performance.

  • Build compelling demos that highlight novel applications of AI agents, NPC behaviors, and game AI bots, with a focus on integration into game engines.

  • Share your impact by publishing your work, contributing to open-source, and presenting at conferences.

As a diverse team with solid goals, we provide autonomy and true influence to each member of SEED. We are looking for an open and curious person; someone who gets a kick out of taking new ideas, investigating them, and adapting their application to games. You have a desire to explore new areas of game development - someone who is passionate, creative, communicative, and invested.

Requirements

  • A degree in Computer Science, a STEM field, or equivalent practical experience related to game AI.

  • 8+ years of experience in software development, game development, or other relevant roles demonstrating the ability to build real-time game AI experiences.

  • Partner with other researchers, engineers, artists, and designers.

  • Experience turning ideas into functional prototypes or demos that showcase concepts in practice.

  • Excellent programming abilities and ability to explain complex concepts.

  • Experience with runtime-compiled languages (e.g., C++, C#) and scripting languages (e.g., Python).

  • Working knowledge of game engines such as Unity, Unreal, Godot, or similar technologies.

  • A genuine interest in video games paired with a critical understanding of how AI is built in games, including the ability to form your own insights on how you can improve it.

Additional Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Computer Science or a STEM field.

  • Experience with Language Models (LLMs, SLMs), Reinforcement Learning, and Imitation Learning.

  • Experience with publications in peer-reviewed conferences or journals.

  • Openness to travel for conferences and visit teams across EA studios.

If you want to be part of — and work with — some of the most incredible people in the field, then this role is for you!
