Worldwide, we combine our teams to form a global group of extraordinary individuals fueled by imagination and a unified passion for creating amazing visuals, sound and experiences. We’re a diverse team that is unified through collaboration, culture and craft.

Role Overview

We are looking for a VFX Artist to join our team in Shanghai and help bring The Sims to life.

You will work within proprietary tools and systems, including visual scripting workflows, to create stylized, whimsical, and readable real-time visual effects that support gameplay, character expression, player feedback, and the overall tone of The Sims. You will collaborate with VFX, Art Direction, Design, Animation, Engineering, Technical Art, Production, and overseas studio partners to deliver high-quality effects within real-time engine memory, platform, and performance constraints.

This is a mid-level role suited for someone with strong hands-on VFX production experience who can independently deliver assigned work, communicate clearly across disciplines, and contribute to the project’s visual language and production quality.

Responsibilities

  • Create stylized interpretations of real-world visual effects that fit The Sims’ tone, visual language, gameplay needs, and performance targets.
  • Produce real-time VFX for a wide range of content, including character interactions, social and emotional feedback, life simulation behaviors, environmental ambience, UI/UX, build/buy features, object interactions, and DLC / Live Service content.
  • Work within proprietary tools and systems to create, implement, test, debug, and polish in-game VFX.
  • Use particles, animated textures, meshes, materials, lights, shaders, and visual scripting workflows to build high-quality real-time effects.
  • Collaborate with the VFX team, Art Direction, Design, Animation, Engineering, Technical Art, Production, Audio, and other cross-discipline partners to achieve the project’s aesthetic and gameplay goals.
  • Contribute to the design and technical implementation of VFX from early exploration through integration, testing, bug fixing, and final polish.
  • Create effects within real-time engine memory and performance constraints, with consideration for multi-platform development.
  • Help maintain a consistent visual language across an ecosystem of effects.
  • Communicate task status, dependencies, and risks clearly with project stakeholders.
  • Maintain clean asset organization, naming conventions, documentation, and workflow practices.
  • As you grow within the project, support knowledge sharing, documentation, or onboarding for new VFX artists when needed.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a VFX Artist in the game industry.
  • Experience contributing to game production using real-time VFX workflows; shipped title or Live Service experience is preferred.
  • Experience creating real-time visual effects using particles, static and animated textures, lights, materials, meshes, shaders, and related workflows.
  • Experience working in game engines or proprietary tools; experience with visual scripting environments is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of Maya, Photoshop, After Effects, and shader graph or material node workflows.
  • Understanding of stylized VFX, timing, color, composition, shape language, visual hierarchy, and gameplay readability.
  • Ability to create effects that support player feedback, character expression, emotional tone, and interaction clarity.
  • Working knowledge of real-time performance considerations such as memory, overdraw, material complexity, texture usage, particle count, and platform constraints.
  • Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams such as Design, Production, Engineering, Art, Modeling, Animation, Technical Art, Audio, and overseas studio partners.
  • Good English communication skills for meetings, written updates, documentation, and feedback discussions.
  • A mindset focused on quality, collaboration, learning, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with The Sims franchise, life simulation games, casual games, stylized games, or character-driven gameplay.
  • Experience with physics-based animation, impact interactions, destruction, water, environmental effects, UI VFX, or interaction feedback.
  • Experience with Houdini, Maya Bifrost, FumeFX, EmberGen, or other simulation/procedural VFX tools.
  • Experience with Unreal Niagara / Blueprints, Unity VFX Graph, Unity or Unreal shader graph, or comparable proprietary visual scripting systems.
  • Experience with GPU profiling or performance analysis tools.
  • Experience with scripting or programming languages such as Python, MEL, C#, or C++.
  • Experience working with distributed, multilingual, or cross-time-zone teams.
  • Experience creating VFX breakdowns, technical documentation, style guides, or workflow documentation.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting other artists is a plus, but not required.
