EA’s Character Animation Research Team (known as the A-Team) is a small team based in Vancouver, British Columbia, committed to advancing the field of Character Animation in games. Our vision is video-game characters with interesting and believable motion that also provides the speed and responsiveness that make our games exciting. Our technology is shared across multiple games in EA including FC, Madden, NHL, skate. TM, Battlefront, Dragon Age and more.


We are looking for Machine Learning experts with a practical mindset, passionate about creating useful tools and innovative features, eager to see their work impact animators, fellow developers, and millions of gamers, and want to own projects from ideation through productization and successful adoption. Reporting to the Head of Machine Learning, EA Sports, the Machine Learning Engineer will join us in creating intuitive experiences powered by ML, pushing the boundaries of game fidelity and bringing our characters to life!


Your Responsibilities:

  • Invent and build ML-driven solutions for complex problems in character animation, agent behavior, physics simulation, and content generation.

  • Design and implement production-ready ML systems that respect real-world game development constraints such as performance, tooling, and iteration speed.

  • Create intuitive, easy-to-use workflows that reduce repetitive manual work while empowering creators to move faster and think bigger.

  • Give users meaningful creative control over model behavior, making experimentation, iteration, and debugging fast and approachable.

  • Optimize models and pipelines to minimize training and inference time without sacrificing quality.

  • Stay current with cutting-edge research in Machine Learning, continuously evaluating how new ideas can be applied to games.

  • Evaluate, extend, and improve both internal and external ML technologies, pushing them further for game-specific use cases.

  • Work closely with content creators and software engineers to ensure tools are maintainable, effective, and genuinely enjoyable to use.


Your Qualifications:

Please note that you do not need to meet all qualifications to be considered. We encourage you to apply if you can meet most of the requirements and are comfortable opening a dialog to be considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Applied Math, Statistics, Machine Learning, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Expert-level proficiency in Python, with deep hands-on experience writing clean, scalable, and high-performance code, including ML frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.

  • Experience productizing ML solutions, either as standalone applications or production services.

  • A solid foundation in linear algebra, statistics, 3D transformations, and mathematical optimization.

  • 3-5 years of hands-on Machine Learning experience, with a strong, practical, problem-solving mindset.

  • The ability to take ideas from research papers to working systems, balancing innovation with usability and performance.

  • Experience handling large-scale datasets (GBs–TBs).
